DURHAM COUNTY CUP FINALS

Both Billingham Under 13's and Billingham Under 18 Colts are competing in County Cup Finals on Sunday 17th April.

Billingham Under 13's have a 1pm K.O v Durham City at Houghton RUFC.

Billingham Under 18 Colts have a 2pm K.O v Westoe at Darlington RUFC.

Both teams would love your support. Hope you can make it to one of the games and enjoy the day.

Congratulations to Billingham Under 17 Colts on a great victory last week v Horden.

Lets hope the Under 13's and Under 18 Colts can bring home the Cups as well.

Newcastle Falcons Academy

Billingham Rugby Club is very proud to announce that two of our youth section players have been selected to join Newcastle Falcons Junior Academy.

Following a recent under 15 England Training Camp, Luke Wilson, of Colin Snowdon's County Cup Finalists under 15 team, was given the opportunity to have another year with the Falcons. After a successful year, playing both under 15 and under 16 Durham County, resulting in a North of England under 16 trial as well as appearing in all of the Falcons games in their under 15 and 16 academy programme.

On the back of a very successful club and county under 15 and under 16 season, Craig Willis of Sean Willis's County Cup Finalists Team has also been selected to join the falcons Academy. Craig was selected at fly half for this seasons under 16 Durham County squad. After impressing both North and England selectors in all three games, Craig went onto represent the North in the regional trials. Craig also represented the Falcons in all of last seasons under 15 programme.

Well done to you both and keep up the hard work and high standards that have got you these honours. Congratulations.

We need your ideas on ways of keeping our club open & our community together during any bad weather, similar to that of the last 8 weeks or so.

No teams have played any games of rugby and training has been disrupted during these weeks and if another bout of bad weather comes along we need to think of ways of using the facilities, getting teams together etc

England Colleges Final Trials.

Having been selected for North of England Colleges, Sean Wallace, Daniel Finney and Marcus Sudren all played in a hard Game v South East England at Warwick University , unfortunately losing as a team on the day but all having good individual performances in front of the watching England selectors. Weather permitting they play South West England on December 5^th as a final game for the North this season. Good Luck boys with England selection.

Hi All,

This will be the last message before what will be Billingham Charity Trophy biggest and best day yet. Over 11 hours of fun and frolics, 10 hours of live music on both the Main stage and Acoustic tent. We will have music for all tastes and far too many different acts to mention.

We got a variety of Fairground Rides and inflatables for our younger supporters, TFM Beat the boredom for the Teenagers with Food and Drink for the slightly older ones. Billinghams own Jazz Band will be putting on a display for us along with the Scouts. Also a Community/Arts village will be putting on Taster sessions of a variety of Sport, dance and art activities.

Believe me i can go on and on listing all the different activities and events.

A major spectacle of the day will be a sponsored (minimum £50) Bungee Jump, we do still have spaces available so if either yourself or somebody you know would love a chance of this then please e mail asap.

Please come along and support a day that will benefit our community, a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to create a day and atmosphere that Billingham can look forward to.

Our chosen charities this year are Great North Air Ambulance and Billingham lad Cole Lancaster, a brave little boy who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, help us make a difference for him.

We need your help now both in helping us raise the profile of the day as well as coming along, having a full day of fun.

Newcastle Falcolns Summer & Pre-Season Camps

This summer the Falcons Rugby Camps will take place at Kingston Park, home of the Falcons as well as travelling further afield to Darlington Mowden Park and Horden RFC. The camps are aimed at youngsters looking to improve their rugby skills via rugby based games, skill sessions and input from the Falcons first team players. There is a mix of 3 and 5 day camps for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

There is also a new camp aimed specifically at young players about to take part in a season of rugby. The day course will include rugby specific skills for your age group & position, an insight into pre-season fitness training and general rugby skills. This is a great opportunity to get ahead of the rest by receiving coaching from professional players and coaching staff.

End of Season Dinner & Awards

Well we have just under 3 weeks to go!!!

Many will have attended their own teams dinner already but this is your chance to come together as a whole club and reflect on a Great season. Tickets are £15 per head (including dinner) and remember it's a mixed night; so an opportunity to bring your other half and thank them for their support of you and the club throughout the season.

I have had nominations in already for Manager of the Year and Player of the Year but surprisingly not many for Volunteer of the Year. We will also be recognising other individuals who have contributed to the season.

What I have not had in is much information about the teams. I am hoping from a summary after the Youth AGM but if you want your team to be mentioned and included in the video highlights I need your summary of achievements and some photos! Time is running out.

Finally what I need more than anything else is for you to confirm your attendance to either me, Colin Gibson, Budgie, Lisa or Alan T ASAP ... oh an d with your money. J

Commemorative Tie

Following Saturday's win and our historic promotion to a National
League for the first time ever we are offering a limited edition
commemorative tie. After all their amazing efforts over the season it
would be unjust to ask the players to pay for their own tie so this is
the deal. You pay £25 for two ties, you get one and a player gets the
other. This offer was very successful on Saturday but there are still
a few ties to reserve. I will be at the club taking orders 6 - 7 on
Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st April and also on Saturday for the cup
match. I know we have a number of fans who aren't Teesside based and
this is an opportunity for you to be part of the celebrations. You can

of getting your commemorative tie to whatever part of the globe you
inhabit.

I would like to mention a Billingham game against rovers on january 7th 1956, headline 11 tries brought rovers heaviest post war rout(41-0). One of the most suprising results in the north east rugby programme, so best of luck in saturdays game,a repeat would be nice.

( A game i remember as i managed 4 tries.)

This weekend we play Rovers and if we win we are promoted as Champions.

We are hoping to beat the record crowd we achieved against Sandal this weekend. I would like to send out a call to all members to come down on Saturday; especially all youth coaches and managers; bring your squad down and be a part of a special day. Remember for children under 12, entry is free. In addition this weekend, all youth members who turn up and show their membership card (U16 and below) will gain free entry to the ground; but ........ bring a friend, an aunt, an uncle, your mam and dad, nana and granddad, sister and brother. We want create an atmosphere that helps our lads over that try line time and time again.

As you are all no doubt aware, Paul Burgum has just completed his marathon walk from Portsmouth. Now he is back home and is looking for as many people to support him and BCT Events at the next round of the battle of the bands night arranged for the 8th April at the Billingham Synthonia theatre Suite (ICI club to you and me). If anyone can make it and would like a nice entertaining night out to see 4 local up and coming bands, who possibly may make it to go and play at the Billingham Charity fun day which as you know is being held on 04th July 2010 at BRUFC. Not only will you be helping the organisation you are also contributing to BCT events nominated charities for this year namely The Great North Air Ambulance and Cole lancaster a local 2 yr old who suffers from Cerebral palsy. We would appreciate it if you could send this to your respective age groups parents as we really do need as many seats on bums as possible.

It is not often at games you hear a good comment regarding referees!! Either ourselves as coaches, supporters or players seem all too often and quickly to comment on the things refs have missed or in our eyes un-fairly made a bad decision. But today I had two other coaches from other teams come up to me and say that " this is the best ref we have had all season". WELL DONE DANNY KIRBY. Billingham rugby club should be proud to have such a good, fair referee and at such a young age too. Its not easy to ref a game and too keep it flowing with such mixed teams as today, he should be very proud of himself. To referee an U16s game, then a mixed U16s v U15s, then 3 teams all playing a mixed U16s game wearing nearly all the same HOOPED banded shirts (looked like a load of hormonal bubble bees buzzing around the pitch), he did himself and the club proud. Hope you go on to greater things refereeing and well done and a big thank you for today.

On Saturday at 3pm, 18 young men will come together with the future of this club in their hands. Where will you be?

On my last post I mentioned we had 6 games to go, 6 games to win for glory! Well 2 have passed and we have won them both. Wins at home to Percy Park and away at Pontefract have put us in a position where we dare to dream of promotion. We have 4 games left and each one will be a cup final; each one will be as big as the last; each one will take us one step closer. Our destiny is in the hands of a select special few. Our forwards who have found their belief and now feel that they can take any pack and drive them 30 yards at a time. Ask Percy Park? Ask Pontefract? Our backs who have galvanized together into an immovable defensive force following the injuries at Old Crocs.

Well there is no bigger game than this weekend. We are sitting top of North One East on points difference above Sandal. Sandal have a game in hand. This weekend we play Sandal at home. If we win we go 2 points clear. If they then win their game in hand they go level again. Our massive points scored will ensure as long as we win this weekend and the next 3 games we will be promoted champions.

I have spent the last couple of Saturday evenings in the company of the 1^st team. They believe they can win every game! I believe in them! Do you? Do you believe that little old Billingham Rugby Club dare to think of being a National rugby club? Then this is the weekend to show your support. We are calling on everyone past and present who believe and want to be there on the day when we recall that famous result against Sandal to come and watch this Saturday. If you are a mini or junior rugby player; you NEED to be there; bring your parents; this is your future. You could become a junior player next year of a National league club. Now that everybody is busy planning tours for next year can I just remind everyone that ALL tour shirts are to be bought from Samurai through the club shop. This applies whether or not the club badge or name is used on the shirts. Touring sides are representing Billingham Rugby Club and therefore comply with Billingham Rugby Club policy. No exceptions. If you have a problem with this I am sure any Executive Committee member would be pleased to discuss it with you.

Lead times are longer than usual at this time of year due to the factory closure over Chinese New Year so if you are touring at Easter or soon after please talk to me before Christmas. Otherwise please get in touch in January for May tours.

Use of Moulded Rubber Multi-Studded Sole Boots (Blades)

Over the past number of years there has been a degree of controversy over the use of Moulded Rubber Multi-Studded Sole Rugby Boots known as Blades. This issue has also been recently raised at Billingham Rugby Club by a number of members and coaches. This communication has been drafted to provide you with the current guidelines from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and update you on the clubs position.

Billingham Rugby Club Executive Committee have been made aware of an injury to one of our youth players and are now in the process of raising this matter further with the Rugby Authorities via our links through the Durham County Rugby Union. This will be done in a controlled manner after considering all of the information available to us.

Guidance from the RFU can be found on their official website www.rfu.com by choosing the following path http://www.rfu.com/TakingPart/PlayerHealth/FAQs.aspx item 5 provides the RFU position on this frequently asked question. The guidance also notes the relevant IRB Game Laws associated with boots and studs (Law 4). Details for your information has been placed below.

Billingham Rugby Club's position on this matter is to conform to these Laws and guidance.

We will update you on any further developments on this matter as appropriate.

Guidance and Laws from RFU

Blades and studs are currently both acceptable as footwear for rugby (as long as they comply with the IRB regulations below). There is not currently a kite mark for rugby boots; manufacturers self certify their studs or blades against regulation 12 to check that they cause no more damage than traditional studs.

The RFU is working with the IRB and the British Standards Institute on this matter to ensure safety standards are appropriate for the game, in the meantime Referees should always check footwear for any sharp or dangerous parts before kick-off in a match.

IRB Regulations and advice to clubs:

BOOTS (including 'Blades') - LAW 4

LAW 4 deals with players' clothing - which includes footwear.

LAW 4(3) deals with studs as follows:

(a) Studs of players' boots must conform with the IRB Specification set out in IRB Regulation 12.

(b) Moulded rubber multi-studded soles are acceptable provided they have no sharp edges or ridges.

LAW 4(4) deals with BANNED ITEMS OF CLOTHING and this includes:

(b) A player must not wear any item that is sharp or abrasive.

(h) A player must not wear any item that is normally permitted by Law, but in the referee's opinion that is liable to cause injury to a player.

(i) A player must not wear a single stud at the toe of the boot.

LAW 4(5) deals with INSPECTION OF PLAYERS' CLOTHING and this includes:

The referee or the touch judges appointed by or under the authority of the match organiser inspect the players' clothing and studs for conformity to this Law.

The referee has power to decide at any time, before or during the match, that part of a player's clothing is dangerous or illegal. If the referee decides that clothing is dangerous or illegal the referee must order the player to remove it. The player must not take part in the match until the items of clothing are removed.

COMMENT

All studs worn must comply with Law 4.

The IRB has contacted all known manufacturers of boots (irrespective of whether or not they are specifically made for rugby use) and this includes manufacturers of 'blades'. These manufacturers are required by the IRB to self certify that their studs comply with Law 4.

'Blades' include Adidas Exchangeable Traxion Studs.

Referees and touch judges will inspect boots only to check that they are safe to play in. They will check that there are no sharp edges or burring etc.

Referees and touch judges will not be looking for kite marks or similar approval markings or manufacturers details.

ADVICE:

Players must always:

Check that their studs are safe to play in Reject any boots that have sharp edges or burring etc.
Ask their retailer for confirmation that the manufacturer complies with IRB Specifications.
The final responsibility is with the players to ensure that they play in safe boots.

Shop news for Christmas

As ever the club shop will be offering a number of ideal Christmas
presents. We have 4 different options of jackets and tops which we
order from Samurai in the UK. These vary from excellent quality
training tops at just £25 to a top class waterproof padded jacket with
detachable fleece lining at £70 with several options in between
price-wise. I will have a few "spares" but to be sure order what you
want by 17th November and the earlier the better! I have samples in
the shop so please ask to see them. Also available are track suits and
waterproof trousers.

If you ordered a training top already these will be here in about 3
weeks. I also ordered training tops in mini sizes.

Already in stock we have sweat shirts, fleeces and polo shirts.

Arriving in the next few weeks will be new stock of black, grey and
white hoodies by popular demand. No need to order these - just watch
out for me carrying in the boxes.....

As well as clothing we have a range of other items for Christmas -
clocks, pens engraved with the club badge and motto and - shortly -
some amazing quality mugs.

Are you interested in a jacket in a larger size - 3XL to 5XL? I can

Jack recently had a driving assessment and has been told that he is able to drive an adapted car using hand controls. With this news he has ordered a car which is expected to arrive next year. Once his car has been made and adapted he can start having driving lessons, and then he will be terrorising the roads in no time.

Jacks trust fund is coming on very well; it has had plenty of donations and will help him with whatever he needs in the future, the trust fund currently has around £17,000 and is growing with the help of people like Billingham's senior coach Chris Hyndman and Jacks mom Janet, who have just finished riding a tandem bike from Newcastle to Northampton, stopping off at rugby clubs along the way to collect donations for the trust fund.

MORE NEWS ON JACK (part 2)

Another big part of jacks' life is wheelchair rugby, he first started last year for the Newcastle bulls and is turning into a useful player. The bulls play games with about 10 other clubs, each taking it in turn to host a tournament usually lasting a weekend. Jack trains once every week at a sports centre in Newcastle and has recently organised training sessions on a Thursday night at the Bede college Sports centre in Billingham.
Wheelchair rugby has really brought jacks confidence back and has helped him massively with coping with life, as most people on his team have been through a similar type of accident he has been able to learn from his team mates experiences.
Jack has proved that he is coping really well when he toured with the wheelchair rugby team to Amsterdam, Holland. In June jack took a plane to Amsterdam to take part in the annual wheelchair rugby tournament at the Sporthallen Zuid. It was a successful tour and the bulls competed really well, coming in the top 10 of over 20 teams. The Amsterdam tour was a hurdle that jack was really looking forward to overcoming, he knew that handling a weekend away without his parents and only one carer would mean he can venture further and for longer later on in his life. I think he realised that life didn't stop when he has his accident and that he can still do pretty much everything his friends do
